The African Bar Association (AFBA) has conveyed its deep condolences to President José Maria Pereira Neves, the government, and the people of Cabo Verde following a tragic motor accident in Fogo that claimed approximately 25 lives.
The devastating incident occurred late Saturday evening, September 5, 2026, when a passenger bus carrying 32 people plunged 30 meters down a deep, rocky ravine along the mountainous Campanas de Cima route. The passengers were primary and secondary students returning from a private school-year excursion to the Pico do Fogo volcanic area. The driver, who organized the annual outing, was also killed
In an official condolence message dated September 7, 2026, AFBA President High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark expressed sorrow on behalf of the association’s Executive Committee, general membership, and the wider African legal fraternity.
“This devastating incident which occurred in Fogo has brought profound sorrow to the people of Cabo Verde and to the African continent as a whole,” Mark stated. “The loss of so many lives in such tragic circumstances is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the need for continued commitment to road safety and the protection of human life.”
The regional body extended its solidarity to the bereaved families, offered prayers for those injured in the crash, and reaffirmed its support for the nation during this period of grief.
