“Africa Cannot Turn Against Itself”- AfBA President Demands Urgent AU Action On Xenophobic Attacks In South Africa

The President of the African Bar Association, High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark, has issued a strong call on the African Union to take immediate and decisive action over the ongoing xenophobic attacks against Africans in South Africa.

In a statement released on May 5, 2026, Mark described the attacks as unjustifiable and deeply troubling. He warned that the violence threatens the unity and shared identity of the African continent.

He stressed that African nations historically stood in solidarity with South Africa during the apartheid struggle. According to him, that shared history of sacrifice and support should now serve as a foundation for unity rather than division.

Mark stated that Africa cannot afford to turn against itself, noting that xenophobic violence directly undermines the vision of a peaceful, united, and prosperous continent.

He called for urgent steps to protect lives, restore dignity, and reinforce the spirit of African brotherhood. He added that while some countries have begun taking measures to safeguard their citizens, isolated national responses will not provide a lasting solution.

The African Bar President emphasised that only a coordinated and unified response led by the African Union can effectively address the crisis. He noted that a collective approach is necessary to tackle the root causes of the attacks and prevent future occurrences.

Mark warned that fragmented responses risk weakening Africa’s collective voice and global influence. He urged African leaders to speak with one voice and act decisively to end xenophobia across the continent.

He concluded by reaffirming the need to uphold the principles of unity, safety, and mutual respect among all Africans, stressing that the continent’s future depends on its ability to stand together in times of crisis.
