The African Bar Association (AfBA) has strongly condemned what it described as a politically motivated and coordinated campaign targeting International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor, Karim A. A. Khan KC. The Association said the attacks represent a direct assault on judicial independence and the integrity of the international justice system.
In a statement signed by its President, High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark, and issued in Abuja on October 6, 2025, the AfBA expressed deep alarm over the ongoing media and political offensive against Karim Khan. The Association said the campaign appears designed to manipulate investigations, damage Khan’s credibility, and pressure the ICC’s independent organs.According to AfBA, recent whistle-blower recordings and public disclosures reveal deliberate attempts to interfere with ICC processes and influence outcomes in politically sensitive cases.

The group said the failure of both the ICC and the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to condemn the smear campaign is deeply troubling and undermines the Court’s credibility.AfBA also referenced a recent incident in which a complainant, supported by a U.S. senator and the Israeli Prime Minister, threatened ICC judges over a pending Venezuela matter involving Karim Khan. The Association described the act as “an assault on judicial independence and due process.
Furthermore, the AfBA criticised members of the ASP Bureau for allegedly engaging with complainants and showing signs of prejudgment. The Association warned that such actions amount to interference and betrayal of the Bureau’s mandate. The AfBA therefore called for an independent and impartial review of all actions taken against Khan, including those by ICC officials and external actors. It also demanded the removal of any ASP Bureau members who have compromised neutrality and urged the ICC to implement safeguards protecting its judges and staff from intimidation or media harassment.
Additionally, the Association demanded a public commitment from the ICC and the ASP leadership to uphold prosecutorial independence, fairness, and due process. The AfBA reaffirmed its dedication to the rule of law and international justice, emphasising that “true justice must never be compromised by political agendas, backdoor pressure, or media manipulations.”
It urged all stakeholders to act courageously in defending institutional integrity and ensuring that justice remains free from manipulation and bias.
