AfBA Session To Tackle Family Law And Judgment Enforcement In Africa

Session No. 14 of the African Bar Association (AfBA) Annual Conference in Ghana will focus on “Family Law and Judgment Enforcement.” The discussion will examine the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG) and related international instruments that impact family law in Africa.

Panellists will explore the intent, policy, and legislative implications of these conventions, especially their influence on domestic relations and family protection. The session will also develop key recommendations for 35 Attorneys General and Solicitors General on how best to strengthen the implementation of these legal frameworks.

The session will be chaired by Charles Kanjama SC, with panellists Joyce Opoku-Boateng, Angela Dwamena-Aboagye PhD, Kezia P. M. Kenneth Azumah Esq (Mrs.), and Rachana Chhin.

Charles Kanjama SC

Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama is the Chair of the Family Law Committee of the African Bar Association. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 21 years of experience. He is the managing partner of Muma & Kanjama advocates in Nairobi, Kenya with extensive practice in Constitutional litigation, Commercial law, legal and governance audits, arbitration and mediation practice. He is a Certified Secretary and Certified Public Accountant who also serves as secretary to the Senior Counsel bar in Kenya. He has served as Chair of the Nairobi Chapter of the Law Society of Kenya.

Joyce Opoku-Boateng

Ms. Joyce Opoku-Boateng is a distinguished lawyer and advocate with over 30 years of experience. A graduate of the University of Ghana, she was called to the Ghana Bar in 1994 and has served as Company Secretary, Legal Counsel, of many reputable state institutions. Until recently, she was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Middle Belt Development Authority, contributing to national development initiatives. She is the Founder of Nimbus Law Firm, specializing in family and property law, and the Founder & CEO of Nimbus Foundation, a gender and child-rights advocacy organization.

Joyce is also the Editor-in-Chief of Nimbus News, a human rights magazine advocating for women and children’s rights. She has served on national boards, including the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Audit Service.

Angela Dwamena-Aboagye

Angela Dwamena-Aboagye is a lawyer, and an advocate for women’s empowerment and child protection. She is the Executive Director of The Ark Foundation, Ghana, a non-profit organization that established the first operational Domestic Violence Shelter in Ghana.

Kezia P. M. Kenneth Azumah Esq (Mrs.)

Kezia P. M. Kenneth Azumah Esq (Mrs.) is a seasoned legal practitioner and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) expert with over a decade of experience in Litigation, mediation, arbitration, and legal consultancy. Her core competencies include negotiation, mediation, arbitration, civil and criminal litigation, family law, medical law & Ethics, Climate Justice and customary law. She is a Lead Consultant at Citadel Legal Consult, and a facilitator at the Africa Centre for Collaborative Dispute Resolution. Kezia is a dedicated advocate for women’s rights and has been trained in using the Maputo Protocol for women’s rights advocacy. She is a member of Ghana National Association of ADR Practitioners.

Rachana Chhin

Rachana Chhin serves as Legal Counsel, UN, for ADF International in New York, NY. In that role, he develops and cultivates relationships with diplomats at United Nations Headquarters, engages in written and oral advocacy, drafts interventions and submissions for the UN and related institutions, and provides counsel on issues related to life, family, religious liberty, free speech, and parental rights.
