The African Bar Association (AfBA) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of two eminent jurists, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais (CJN Rtd) and Justice D. D. Abutu (Rtd), describing their deaths as significant losses to Nigeria’s judiciary.

In separate condolence letters addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat M. O. Kekere-Ekun, and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, AfBA President, High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark, noted that the association received the news of both deaths with shock but with gratitude to God for their fulfilled lives of service.

Regarding the late Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, AfBA described him as a rare figure in Nigeria’s judicial history who served the Supreme Court with dignity, courage, and a commitment to justice. The statement emphasized that he demonstrated financial prudence, transparency, and moral integrity while delivering landmark judgments and managing the apex court.

“Justice Uwais was not only a friend of the Bar but a partner in its mission, and even in retirement, he remained actively involved in advancing the ideals of the legal profession,” Eddy Mark said. “We extend our condolences to his widow, Maryam Uwais, and the rest of the family, as well as to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

Similarly, in a condolence letter to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, AfBA paid tribute to Justice D. D. Abutu, noting that he served with distinction and integrity as a judge and Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. His contributions, both judicial and administrative, were commended as exemplary.

Eddy Mark stated, “Justice Abutu lived a life of integrity and selfless judicial service. We mourn his departure but also celebrate a career filled with honour and dedication.”

The AfBA president concluded both condolence messages by praying for the repose of the deceased jurists’ souls and strength for their families and colleagues in this time of grief.
