African bar delegation meets with Ecowas

The African Bar Association Executive Council Members departed for the rich ancient Benin City the capital of Edo state Nigeria in the early hours of Tuesday 5th of February for its 27th Exco meeting.

Benin City happens to be the AFBA’s president home town, and since this year makes it his 3 years in office for a reign of 5 years, in his words, the president said; he things it is only natural and wise to bring such an event back home.

The executive council members were warmly received from the airport by a delegation from the University of Benin (Uniben) which the Afba’s president happens to be an alumnus and also a good ambassador of the great institution of learning.

From the airport, the journey to courtesy visits began. Primo the Afba paid a visit to the Hon. Attorney General and commissioner of Justice of Edo State Prof. Yinga Omorogbe.

Prof. Yinka Omorogbe was excited to welcome the executive council members of the Afba and after exchanging pleasantries, members where introduced to the Prof.  Yinka Omorogbe  before the issues of the visit were tackled.

Amongst the many issues discussed where;

  • The presence and impact of the African Bar Association to law societies in Africa.
  • The activities of lawyers in the careers of politicians.
  • How the various law societies can fish out the bad few lawyers staining the image of the noble profession.
  • The coming elections in Nigeria that will be holding from February 16th 2019.
  • The Afba 2019 Conference that will be held in Cairo, Egypt in September from 2nd to 5th

The Afba council members were marvelled by the brilliant contributions and remarks given by Prof. Yinka Omorogbe and she also pledged her support to the Afba in any way she can.

The African Bar Association committee chairs’ meeting started on a very good note, the committee chairs’ were warmly welcomed to Lagos, Nigeria on Monday 4th of February by the Association president Hannibal Uwaifo. The member countries represented are Cameroon,The Demovratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Kenya, Sierra Leone and of course the host member country Nigeria.

The committee caucus started on a light note with a dinner ceremony at the Association’s president’s residence in lekki , Lagos, were members and friends of the Afba graced the occasion.

It was a nice time were pleasantries were exchanged, catch ups and strategies for the 27th Exco Meeting to be held in the ancient Benin City the capital of Edo state Nigeria.

Committee Chairs are respectfully informed that  the Continental Executive Council meeting will hold on Tuesday February 5, 2019 at the senate chambers of the university of Benin city Nigeria at 11am.This very crucial meeting which will discuss recent events across the continent including human rights abuses bad governance and violations of the rule of law as well as the 2019 annual conference in Cairo will be preceded by courtesy visits to some dignitaries in the ancient city of Benin to be led by the attorney general of Edo state Nigeria. 

Arrival date in Lagos ,Nigeria: For members who are coming from outside Nigeria is 4th of February. Kindly send your flight itinerary directly to me or to the Executive Director Mr Rudolf Ezeani as quickly as possible to enable proper and seamless arrangements for Airport pick up and lodging arrangements. Visa on arrival have been arranged at the Lagos Airport for those who have requested.

The President will host a welcome reception for all Exco members and some invited guests at his residence 14 Tom Ogboi Avenue, off freedom way lekki phase 1 Lagos Nigeria at 6 p.m. on the February 4. Departure for Benin City will be 6am on February 5 to catch the flight to Benin City. Flight tickets have been reserved for our foreign guests .The itinerary in Benin including Social events and the departure to Abuja on the 6th of February to continue Courtesy visits to some top authorities and stakeholders as well as proposed solidarity visits to 2 of our Life Council members who have been pivotal to modest achievements of the African Bar Association so far in Port Harcourt and Sokoto will be made available at the reception in Lagos. Agenda of the Council meeting will be sent in by the Secretary General on January 31st.

Chairmen of Committees are members of the Expanded Exco and should attend all the programs starting from the reception on Feb.4th.

Nigerian members should be on hand to join in welcoming our arriving colleagues.
