THEME : I AM GENERATION EQUALITY: REALIZING WOMEN’S RIGHTS.

CAMPAIGN THEME : AN EQUAL WORLD IS AN ENABLED WORLD

The 2020  IWD campaign theme is drawn from a notion of 'Collective Individualism.' Meaning we are all parts of a whole. Our individual choices, actions, conversations, behaviors and mindsets can have an impact on our larger society.

Collectively, we can each help to create a gender equal world.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. Beijing Platform for Action is recognized as the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls, everywhere.

2020 is a pivotal  for advancing gender equality worldwide, as the world takes stock of progress made for women’s rights since its adoption. It will also mark other galvanizing moments in the gender equality movement: a five-year milestone towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals; the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security; and the 10th anniversary of UN Women’s establishment.

The global consensus is that despite the seeming progress made, real change has not been glaring for most women and girls in the world. Not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality till date, not even God’s own Country- USA. Numerous obstacles remain unchanged in law, culture and in religion. Women and girls continue to be relegated to the background, most agonizing is the fact that even in the most noble of professions in this age and time, we are yet to change our patriarchal and misogynistic attitudes- setting up committees,  cabinets and boards on a 8 to 1 ratio. The Federal and State Governments constituting cabinets on a 80/20 %. What then do you expect of the unskilled sector.

Alarming rate of multiple forms of violence at home, work and in public spaces with a significant threat to hard-won gains. An extant case is the rejection of the Nomination of Honorable Justice

Akon Ikpeme as the Chief Justice of Cross River State on the basis of ethnicity and gender. It still beats my imagination as law makers ought to know better considering the cardinal pillars of Rule of Law namely:

Supremacy of the Law

Equality before the law, Accountability to the law,

Fairness in application of the law,

Separation of powers,

Participation in decision-making,

Legal certainty

Avoidance of arbitrariness and

Procedural and legal transparency

It’s time to challenge stereotypes, head on, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.

Collectively and individually we  can help create a gender equal world.
